April and May were busy as usual. First in was New Orleans songwriter Greg Wiz and his band Daydreams & Curry produced by Mike Napolitano (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Royal Crown Review, Blind Melon, Andrew Bird) with another super analog project, hardcore heavyhitters Zegota were in with a new record recorded live in NYC, Suzanne Elliot (formerly with Gravity's Pull) was in with her first solo project produced by John Plymale (Meat Puppets, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Athenaeum, Kim Richey, Far Too Jones) some tracks were very reminiscent of Bill Laswell's production of latter day Golden Palominos, Asheville's Americana darlings Black Eyed Dog brought in their sophomore project produced and mixed by Mitch Easter (R.E.M., Pavement, Velvet Crush, Shalini)- it is definitely worth checking out, popster Evan Olsen was in with his followup to his Universal Records release proving once again that he can craft and arrange pop songs with the best. Another Asheville band, this time heavy rockers Minivoid proved that Asheville is not all singer/songwriters, americana or bluegrass, Greensboro's production team Spot Rushaz, brought in rap group Bakwoodz. Proving that Carolina does have a strong emerging rap/hip-hop scene, Wilmington's Rodeo Boy brought in their followup to their critically acclaimed self-titled release. Richmond's Luckytown, (a personal favorite), brought in an EP produced by Ted Comeford (Juniper Lane, The Evoka Project, Maverick Records Recording artist's; Ebo's guitarist) and mixed by Mitch Easter. Americana rockers Patty Hurst Shifter, produced by Byron McKay (Kenny Roby), showed up with a really distinct record worth checking out. Another John Plymale produced record, this time by artist Joe Williams ,was very reminiscent of early James Taylor. In Joe's defense, he comes by it honestly, he's definitely the real deal. A' capella group the Clefhangers, brought in another contemporary vocal project and the ever-energetic Andy Kuncl brought in some demos for his upcoming project. All tracks were produced by David Lloyd (Rebar, Men In Black Trailer, SAS national spots). Closing out the month was Durham Gospel vocalist Gerald Hinton, (produced by Willie Hill), with a followup to his single currently running on BET.
